Why do we care so much about the quality of our playground surface materials?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says about 200,000 U.S. children end up in hospital emergency rooms every year due to injuries sustained on the playground, most of which are caused by falls, particularly from climbing equipment.
Things are getting better. However, the most common surface materials used in the past included concrete, asphalt, and hard-packed earth. Parks administrators and school playground designers in 2017 understand that these "natural” playground surface materials aren’t a good idea, especially at slide exits and under swings—areas where kids tend to fall the most.
That’s why we care about the integrity and effectiveness of our No Fault Sport Group safety surface products. They offer modern playgrounds a safer alternative with consistent fall protection to keep kids safe.
Our Top Five Safety Surface Materials
Here is a list of No Fault’s top five playground surface materials for meeting all shock absorption and accessibility guidelines established in ADA, ASTM, and CPSC.
No Fault Safety Surface is our poured-in-place (PIP) rubber surface for standard playgrounds. It also comes in a range of colors that make eye-catching designs and themed play spaces possible. It’s a great long-term value, considering its lifetime usability makes the initial investment better for the long run.
Little maintenance may be required but, overall, PIP surfacing is the easiest surfacing material to clean and maintain. The real reason PIP surfacing is smart is because it’s safe! A binder poured at the playground site holds the energy-absorbing recycled rubber in place, which cures to form a unitary shock absorbing surface.
2. No Fault Safety Surface for Water Play
Got a pool area or splash pad that needs active fall protection? Walking on our slip-resistant, durable No Fault Safety Surface for Water Play is like walking on a cushion. It won’t get too hot in the summer sun, and, like our tiles and PIP surfacing, it comes in a wide range of color combinations.
The surface drains quickly because it’s porous. Also, it’s a unitary surfacing, there are no seams or edges between segments—little feet won’t get tripped up!
Made with the highest quality EPDM or TPV rubber granules blended with a polyurethane binder, No Fault Safety Surface for Water Environments is professionally installed at 3/8” depth for both applications. You’ll find that it’s ideal for barefoot play in wet areas.
3. No Fault Safety Tiles
No Fault Safety Tiles come in several sizes, with 2’x2’ being the most common. They are manufactured in the USA using 100 percent recycled rubber and are engineered to reduce the risk of injury associated with falls from playground equipment. Our tiles are rated for falls up to 10 feet (with the use of an underlying foam pad).
No Fault Safety Tiles and accessories can be installed on concrete, asphalt or loose base surfaces with a protective fabric using our proprietary 4 Corner Lock system. The most common and secure method is adhesion using a polyurethane adhesive. No Fault Safety Tiles are an excellent choice for new or renovated playgrounds, and offer easy installation, low maintenance, and superior performance—and the industry's only 15-year warranty!
No Fault PlaySafe 50 Turf System is our newest playground safety surface innovation, designed to bring sustainability, long-term value, and years of safe fun to your play area. It can be installed over foam padding or a poured-in-place impact layer to deliver superior fall protection and ADA wheelchair accessibility.
"Crumb fill” was a popular surface choice for years, but kids have a knack for kicking the crumbs away from where they’re supposed to be. Wood mulch, pea gravel, and wood chips have to be raked and leveled regularly to maintain fall height protection around slides and swings.
No Fault Bonded Rubber Mulch solves this problem with a single density pour of shredded rubber mulch blended with traditional polyurethane adhesive binder, creating a unique, natural appearance for your outdoor activity area.
