The organization works to improve Louisiana recreation and park facilities by uniting and providing services to professionals in the parks and recreation field. Safety Guidelines and Standards

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is an independent developer of technical standards used in testing products. Of the 12,000+ ASTM standards used around the world, there are several regarding playground safety surfaces, such as:

  • F1292-22 Standard Specification for Impact Attenuation of Surfacing Materials Within the Use Zone of Playground Equipment
  • F3351-19e1 Standard Test Method for Playground Surface Impact Testing in Laboratory at Specified Test Height
  • F3012-22 Standard Specification for Loose-Fill Rubber for Use as a Playground Safety Surface under and around Playground Equipment
  • F1951-21 Standard Specification for Determination of Accessibility of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is a government agency that creates product safety guidelines. In 1981, the CPSC published A Handbook for Public Playground Safety that includes guidelines for designing, constructing and maintaining public playgrounds. The handbook, now called Public Playground Safety Handbook, has been revised over the years to address innovations in public playgrounds. Visit the CPSC website for more information.
