With spring upon us, it’s important to make sure your No Fault rubber safety surfacing is clean and well maintained to weather the warmer months ahead. One of the reasons our poured-in-place (PIP) rubber safety surfaces are so popular is due to their durability and low maintenance, but some routine care is still needed to keep it in top shape. The maintenance and cleaning not only preserve the integrity of the surface for safety, but also gives you an attractive surface for years to come.
The need for maintenance and repairs will depend on the amount of use the surface receives. Typically, only small repairs will be needed at high-traffic areas, such as underneath swings, at the bases of slides, and entry/exit points. Addressing maintenance needs when wear first becomes apparent will keep you from having to replace the entire playground surface, saving you a lot of money in the long run. Repair kits are available for safety surfaces that show signs of aging and use where the color cap has been separated from the shock absorbing black mat. To request a repair kit, contact our Production Department by filling out the request a repair kit form.
Here are some tips to keep your safety surfaces fresh and ready for the warmer weather:
Monthly Maintenance is Key
Remove loose debris like sand, dirt, and leaves that have collected on your safety surface using a broom, leaf blower, vacuum, or hose on a monthly basis. More frequent removal of debris is recommended if your playground is near trees and prone to excess leaves collecting in the play space.
Clean the Entire Surface
Wet the surface and apply a mixture of full-strength all-purpose cleaner and water using a garden pump sprayer. Work on a small section at a time to ensure you don’t overlook an area, which could leave a streaky or spotty appearance. Once you clean the surface, rinse it thoroughly using a garden hose with an attached spray nozzle.
Consider Timing
In order to give cleaning products enough time to react without evaporating, it’s best to clean during the early morning or late evening hours.
Use our Recommended Equipment and Supplies and Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Here is a list of equipment and supplies we recommend that you use when cleaning:
Avoid these chemicals as they can be detrimental to the safety surface and result in termination of the No Fault Safety Surface warranty:
The allocation of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER)
funding also provides a timely opportunity for schools across America to enhance their playgrounds, including safety surfacing. ESSER funds can be used to enhance play spaces. ESSER III funds must be committed by Sept. 30, 2024, and district leaders have flexibility when it comes to how best to use the funds to meet the needs of their school communities.
