Poured-in-Place Rubber Surfacing

Poured-in-place rubber surfacing is an innovative approach to creating safe, durable and attractive outdoor spaces. This specialized technique combines rubber granules with a shock-absorbing base layer and binding agents to create a unitary, cushioned surface that enhances safety and accessibility across diverse environments.

As the original pioneer of PIP technology, we bring decades of expertise to every installation. At No Fault Surfaces, our proven track record includes more than 16 million square feet of surfacing across seven countries, establishing us as the trusted leader in rubber safety surfacing solutions worldwide.

What Is Poured-In-Place Rubber Surfacing?

Poured-in-place rubber surfacing is a two-layer system that creates a permanent, resilient safety surface. The process begins with an attenuation base layer, made from recycled rubber buffings. This material provides the critical shock-absorption needed for fall protection. The foundational layer is then covered with a wearing course of colored ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber granules bound together with polyurethane adhesive.

The result is poured-rubber flooring that cures into a unified surface with no gaps or weak points where materials might be vulnerable to outdoor elements.

Installing PIP Rubber Surfacing on Your Site

Unlike premanufactured rubber tiles or mats, pour-in-place rubber surfacing is custom installed directly at your site. This on-site installation method allows for complete design flexibility, accommodating irregular shapes, curved borders and integrated graphics that would be impossible with modular products.

The poured-rubber playground surfacing also conforms to existing grade variations and can incorporate drainage solutions specific to your site conditions.

What Makes PIP Rubber Distinct?

The distinction between PIP rubber and other surfacing options includes performance and longevity. For example, loose-fill materials, such as engineered wood fiber, require constant maintenance and replenishment. Even rubber tiles can separate or shift over time. However, properly installed PIP rubber playground surfacing maintains its integrity for years.

PIP rubber surfacing also eliminates the gaps where debris accumulate, weeds emerge or trip hazards develop, which are common problems with alternative solutions.

Benefits of PIP Technology

Poured-in-place rubber surfacing delivers exceptional advantages that make it the preferred choice for safety-critical applications.

  • Superior safety performance: The cushioned surface provides critical fall height (CFH) protection, reducing injury risk from falls while maintaining excellent traction when wet.
  • Ideal accessibility: The rubber technology creates a smooth, unitary surface that accommodates wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility devices.
  • Weather resilient: Our technology is engineered to withstand extreme temperatures, ultraviolet (UV) exposure and moisture without cracking, fading or deteriorating over time.
  • Permeable design: The rubber surfacing allows water to drain through efficiently, reducing puddles and enabling faster return to use after rainstorms.
  • Customizable aesthetics: We offer our rubber surfacing in a range of different and vibrant colors as well as creative patterns that transform functional spaces into visually engaging environments.
  • Low maintenance: PIP rubber surfacing requires minimal upkeep compared to loose-fill materials, with no need to rake, level or replace the materials.

Versatility and Long-Term Value

Poured-in-place rubber surfacing is a smart investment that can deliver returns far beyond the initial installation. The versatility of PIP allows it to adapt to many outdoor spaces, from compact urban playgrounds to expansive recreational complexes. Custom color combinations and design patterns can reinforce branding, navigation or educational themes while serving functional purposes.

The total cost of ownership for poured-in-place rubber is very competitive compared to other surfacing options. While initial costs may exceed traditional materials, the extended lifespan of properly installed poured-rubber flooring is often 10 to 15 years or more. This long lifespan combined with minimal maintenance requirements results in a better return on investment.

Plus, unlike loose-fill materials that require constant replenishment or mulch that decomposes, poured-in-place rubber maintains its integrity and appearance year after year. The permanent nature of pour-in-place rubber surfacing eliminates concerns about material displacement, contamination or the need for regular top-offs, freeing up maintenance resources for other priorities.

Poured-in-place rubber surfacing’s lower maintenance requirements and longer durability make it one of the most cost-effective safety surfacing choices over the long term. There is no need for specialized equipment to maintain proper depth or coverage, no annual deliveries of replacement material and no labor costs associated with redistributing displaced surfacing. These qualities of PIP rubber offer significant advantages for property managers and facility directors in terms of upkeep, safety and aesthetics.

Rubber Surfacing for Playgrounds and Safety

Safety is the core of every poured-in-place installation. The engineered attenuation layer provides critical impact absorption that can be precisely calibrated to meet or exceed ASTM F1292 standards for fall height protection. This customization can give the appropriate cushioning beneath tall climbing structures while lower equipment can use different specifications — all within a single installation.

Beyond fall protection, PIP surfacing addresses multiple safety dimensions. The slip-resistant texture maintains traction even during wet conditions, helping reduce slip-and-fall incidents. The smooth, unitary surface also eliminates tripping hazards created by uneven or loose fill, exposed roots or displaced materials. For individuals with sensory sensitivities, the consistent surface provides predictable feedback without the uncertainty of loose materials shifting underfoot.

The antimicrobial properties of rubber surfacing also contribute to health and safety by resisting mold, mildew and bacterial growth. These are important considerations for high-touch surfaces used by kids. Additionally, the permeable design can prevent standing water that could harbor mosquitoes or create bacterial breeding grounds, contributing to overall site health and safety.

ADA Compliance and No Fault Surfaces Technology

Accessibility is not just a regulatory requirement — it’s a commitment to inclusive design that welcomes everyone. Our poured-in-place installations meet or exceed ADA accessibility guidelines and comply with ASTM F1951 standards for accessible surface systems.

PIP surfacing provides a firm, stable and slip-resistant area that satisfies ADA requirements for ground and floor surfaces. This ensures that individuals using wheelchairs, walkers, canes or other mobility devices can navigate freely and confidently. Unlike loose-fill materials that create resistance and instability, a unitary surface provides consistent, predictable support that does not shift under wheels or compress unevenly.

Our installations also address accessible route requirements, creating compliant pathways to and through play areas, athletic fields and other recreational spaces. Proper slope management during installation can help meet drainage needs without creating barriers for wheeled mobility devices. We can even incorporate color contrasting to provide visual cues that assist individuals with visual impairments.

By prioritizing ADA compliance in every installation, we help you avoid costly retrofits while demonstrating your commitment to serving entire communities.
